October. Autumn is in full swing, the leaves are falling off the trees and the nights have drawn in. It’s the perfect time of year for cinema!
Sadly we lost the great Glenda Jackson in the summer. Her final film, with the now retired Michael Caine, is The Great Escaper. Based on the true story of a veteran who snuck out of his care home in order to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy after being told he wasn’t allowed to go, it’s an inspiring tale of adventure, courage and acceptance of the past. With Michael Caine confirming his retirement following this role, it’s a fitting final film for two legends of British film.
October also sees the return of a grand Dame of British film, Maggie Smith in her new film The Miracle Club. Also starring Kathy Bates and Laura Linney, it tells of a group of women from a small Irish town who go on a pilgrimage to the French town of Lourdes. It’s going to be a real treat seeing three of the finest actresses around squaring off against each other.
There is so much more this month too; the new Martin Scorsese Killers of the Flower Moon, Scottish radio star and writer Stuart Cosgrove is visiting for a Q+A with the film of his book Cassius X, the greatest concert film ever made Stop Making Senseand the third instalment of Lord of the Rings.
But before all that, how about starting the month off with a little sunshine, to show the summer months that have passed (or didn’t really come this year) with My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3? Some comedy hijinks in the sun is sure to brighten these colder dark nights.
