Eden Court's Head of Film, Paul MacDonald-Taylor, introduces our May cinema programme.
At first glance May is an extremely high octane month - with some of the biggest films of the pre-summer season. Starting with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt – one of the hottest duos on screen since Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor – in the stunt filled and spectacularly fun The Fall Guy. Kristen Stewart is back in Love Lies Bleeding, the new film from Rose Glass (Saint Maud), where she plays a gym manager who falls for a body builder as they’re pulled in to her criminal family’s activities. It’s the film I’m most looking forward to this month.
We’re back with the highest revs possible with the new Mad Max film Furiosa, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over from Charlize Theron before finishing off the month with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Oh, and the Inverness Film Fans film this month, as part of their Train Season, is one of the most exciting Hollywood films ever made – The Train starring Burt Lancaster. You could not wish for more action.

With the sun starting to shine some people’s thoughts might turn to Wimbledon in a couple of months – so a perfect way to start the spring is with Luca Guadagnino’s (Call Me By Your Name) new film Challengers, a sexy, fun and exciting look at tennis (and I’m as amazed as you are that tennis can be so hot!).
‘But Paul’, I hear you call ‘what happened to all the wonderful films from all round the world you love?’ Well, as always we have another fabulous selection. From Germany, there’s the Oscar-nominated The Teachers’ Lounge, with one of the best performances you’ll see all year from Leonie Benesch as a teacher on the edge. From France; Two Tickets To Greece, which was at the Inverness Film Festival last year, starring Kirsten Scott Thomas and Laure Calamy. The cherry on the top, from Georgia, is Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry (which also screened at IFF23) my favourite film from last year – Eka Chavleishvili gives a beautiful performance as a middle-aged woman who’s always lived for looking after her family before discovering herself and her desires. It’s a must see for all my fellow lovers of world cinema.

In the midst of all that we also have a mini Ewan McGregor season. His new film Bleeding Love, also starring his daughter in a touching drama, alongside re-issues of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, Shallow Grave and the thumpingly well-soundtracked Trainspotting.
What a month at the movies!
